New York Program

August 2016 Intake

Nicu participated in the New York programme after graduating from the University Alexandru loan Cuza of Lasi, Romania with a Business Administration degree. Nicu's work experience whilst on the Programme was in the wealth management field, but in his current role, works as a Digital Strategist (Inbound Marketing especially) at MobileXpense, a SaaS company which offers a T&E solution for Fortune 500 companies and mid-sized businesses. He currently lives and works in Brussels, Belgium and shares his continuing cultural adventures with us.

How did you get into this line of business?
Even though my Mountbatten experience was related to the wealth management field, I do believe the environment itself – academic and internship experiences – prepared me with the right skillset and attitude – critical thinker, problem solver and a thoughtful approach.

Moreover, the experience in New York was for sure a catalyst of change in becoming a better T-shaped professional.

What made you decide to live abroad again?
I do believe in multiculturalism and having different experiences. It is the best way to have a high degree of self-awareness and constant improvement. When you are abroad, at least at the beginning, you have time to spend by yourself and dive into your own beliefs.

How did you make this happen?
A friend of mine put me in contact with the CEO and he was really impressed by my previous international experience (London + New York), and this did make a difference when making the decision to offer me the responsibility of growing the business in the online environment.

Have you experienced any culture shock as a Romanian living and working in Brussels?
The only shock was related to the way of working - they are more outgoing and laid back.

What's your home environment like?
I live 3 minutes from the office. It is a cozy place with a big kitchen. Sometimes I do enjoy cooking in the lunch break!

Describe a "typical" albeit interesting work day.
Working with the marketing manager in building the right strategies (short-term and long-term) to overcome the main challenges faced in B2B marketing – lead generation, content marketing, building personas etc.

What's the breakfast and lunch culture etc?
People are organized in various "tribes". Often people gather in "functional tribes" from the same department and have meaningful discussions about work or sharing their social life. But sometimes they form "cultural tribes" – French people with French people, Belgian people with Belgian people., Romanians with Romanians etc.

How would you describe the culture of your place of work?
Value based culture, agile and customer centric.

What time do you normally leave your workplace at the end of the working day?
Usually at 6 PM, but when I am facing important challenges, I do stay longer, but no later than 8 PM.

What's your experience of the social scene in Brussels? Is there anything else you would like to add?
You can feel the "European" mindset and attitude. There are a lot of cultures, but most importantly it is really close to other effervescent cities – Amsterdam and Paris especially. And of course, you can't miss the waffles and the beer.
