New York Program

March 2009 Intake

What and where did you study before your Mountbatten internship?
BA Fashion Marketing and Communication at Nottingham Trent University followed by 2 years at Global Radio as an S&P Manager, and 2 years at ITV as a Multiplatform Manager.

What made you apply for the Mountbatten programme?
Like most of my fellow alumni, to work and live in New York had always been a lofty dream of mine - to eat dollar slices; to sit in Central Park in the sun; to hang out with hipsters in Bedford Ave; and partake in a bottomless brunch!
Whilst working at ITV I made a friend in Cassandra - another MB alumni who'd highly recommended the experience... It all sounded too good, and within the month I had applied.

Describe your sponsor company and your role within it.
My year was spent working at Panache Lingerie as a Sales and Marketing manager. Panache is a leading specialist of D plus lingerie, well established in the UK and with a small team based out of a New York office. My role as a Sales and Marketing Executive was multi-functional due to the size of the team which had the feel of a start-up at times, and meant I could have fingers in lots of different pies from selling in & managing client orders, keeping track of PR activity including creating collateral and press releases and coordinating events, right through to helping manage and man the Panache Lingerie's stand at trade shows.

What was the highlight/most memorable moment of your working experience during this year?
My biggest learning experience in the role was over the 2 trade shows I worked on. From sourcing exhibition supplies, to organizing the design of the stand, setting up appointments with key clients, to supporting the models we had presenting the ranges, and all whilst selling for 12 hours a day - I don't think I knew hard work before then!
Oh...and there was the time I supplied Lingerie to Scarlet Johannsen to be worn in the 2nd Iron Man Movie. That was fun.

What was the social highlight/most memorable moment during this year?
There are just too many…from all the weekend trips (LA, Miami, DC, Boston, Niagara etc etc...), to the fun days - The Highline, Nathans Coney Island Hot Dog eating competition, Bryant Park Ice Skating... and the funner nights from Halloween fancy dress as Edward Scissorhands and Tortilla Flats for Mexican Bingo!
Probably the most embarrassing social highlight was having the NY Fire Brigade arrive at Thomas Jefferson on Christmas Day and evacuating the whole building when my lovingly prepared pigs in blankets burnt in the oven. I wasn't the most popular person that day.

Please share a little wisdom/philosophy that you acquired during your internship.
That anything is possible no matter what the obstacles...there's always a solution, and resilience is underrated!

If you could change anything about your internship, what would it be?
I wish I'd used the year to be more entrepreneurial and work through more new ideas and initiatives - Panache was the kind of place in which that may have been welcomed as it was a small but nimble team.

What happened after completing the year - what did you do next?
Coming back to the UK in the wake of a recession was an interesting challenge for my intake. I was offered a more senior position back at ITV in London which is where I was able to develop my commercial skill set & valuable media relationships which still serve me well!

Where are you now in your working life and what do you do?
Still based in London, I'm the Sales Director of Endemol Shine Beyond - a premium digital content network. We are at the forefront of social content production, creating original channels including RuleEmSports, ICON and Legends of Gaming, and also work with and represent a range of social influencers including KSI, Fearne Cotton and KaushalBeauty to produce branded content. It's a really exciting time to be in this industry as it's developing at such a rapid speed!

Do you have any future plans that you would like to realize & what are they (career & social)?
I'd love the opportunity to work Stateside again in some capacity - I've got my eye on the West Coast this time round!

What three words would you use to describe yourself?
Positive, Explorer, LOLS

What would people be surprised to learn about you?
Champion Irish Dancer (Hull c.1995 and I was older and taller than everyone else I competed with so kind of cheating. This occasionally comes out when enough pints have been consumed).
