Welcome to the Alumni Newsletter

November 2012

It's been an eventful and dramatic month especially Stateside, which has seen Obama re-elected to the US Presidency, the October snowstorm sweeping through Manhattan, and, most recently and disastrously, Hurricane Sandy affecting huge swathes of the country. We would like to convey our sympathy to all of those who have experienced losses through these climatic disasters, and wish the U.S. a speedy programme of recovery over the forthcoming months.

In this issue you can read Siobhan Kinealy's personal account of her recent experiences of the challenges faced living day to day in New Jersey during this period; Armistice Day Celebrations in New York, as well as two alums who have recently set up their own businesses. The usual sections such as jobs also appear in this issue, and you can view a selection of the stunning photos that were taken at the Annual Halloween Party in London under the events section.

We would like to wish everybody a belated Happy Thanksgiving, and thank you all for your contributions.

Coming next month, our First Anniversary Issue of the Alumni Newsletter!

Armstice Day Celebration in New York

Armistice Day was honoured at the Queen Elizabeth Memorial Garden in New York by the laying of wreaths by members of the various British and Commonwealth organisations and Consulates. Dr. Paul Beresford-Hill placed a wreath on behalf of the Mountbatten Institute, and in the photograph is flanked by Adam Burgess (March 2011 - New York) and Charles Arrowsmith (August 2011 - New York), both of whom are currently working in New York. Charles is Assistant Chief of Staff to the Consul General in New York, and Adam has recently joined Grant Thornton Ltd., in their mid town office.

Following the ceremony the participants joined a lunch at India House which was sponsored by the St. George's Society of New York. Attending on behalf of Mountbetten were: Chief of Staff Vicki Downey, with current interns Samantha Vogel and Jordon Wiggin.

Current St. George Mountbatten Intern Bethany Charlton, along with Alum Anna Titley (September 2009 - New York), did a sterling job organizing the event.

Hurricane Sandy

We all have tremendous sympathy for those who have been unfortunate enough to experience the recent extreme climatic disasters in the US, but thought we would like to share one alum's account of her last eighteen months in New Jersey/New York. Siobhán Kinealy (March 2009 - New York) shared the following with us:

"After being a Mountbatten March 2009-2010, I returned in August 2011 to attend Rutgers School of Law in Newark, New Jersey. I have not even been here 18 months and I have felt a freak earthquake, battened down the hatches for Hurricane Irene and been stranded in New York after an October snowstorm flooded towns and brought down the transport infrastructure. It has been quite a 15 months but nothing could have prepared me for Sandy..." Read Full Story.

New Business Alumni

Two of our alumni have recently been extremely busy setting up their own businesses, and we thought we would share with you what they have been doing:

Chris Holman (August 2007 - London) still resides in London. He recently launched a website, www.londonhood.com, with his partner, Rebecca Parsy, which is offering Londoners and visitors alike a piece of London that they can hang on their wall. Their furnished bus blinds are iconic pieces of the city and the final outcome is sleek, smooth and trendy. The signs look great and are the perfect way to remind all those who spent their time in London about their favourite areas of this great city.

Chris is offering all current interns and alumni a 15% discount by using the code: 'mountbatten' which will be good until December 31st, 2012.

Anika Mistry (August 2011 - New York) has been busy setting up her cake business, Love Rosie Cupcakes & Cakes since 2010. Anika and her sister have been baking since they were young and after creating many cakes for their family and friends, they realized that they could turn their hobby into a business. As Anika says, "baking gives us a chance to be creative whether it is creating cupcakes for a birthday party or a lavish wedding cake display".

They have managed to build up a client base and grow their number of orders all through word of mouth and recommendations. This has enabled them to build up a great portfolio and they are starting to advertise now in order to bring their cakes to many more people!

We would like to wish them both every success with their ventures, and look forward to getting an update next year.
