Welcome to the Alumni Newsletter

January 2013

Happy 2013!
To start off this year's news, and get us out of winter hibernation mode, we have a feature on a new exciting Mountbatten initiative, Discovering Philanthropy, which has been launched with alumni and interns in New York, and look forward to initiating a similar programme in London; some interesting volunteer opportunities during the next few months in New York; and news of a group of four alumni who are hoping to attract sponsorship for their own arranged sponsored cycle ride from Brixton to Brighton for Unite Against Cancer. There are also currently a number of jobs available at Twitter (London), so please go to our Jobs section for full details. Don't forget to get in touch with any features/issues that interest you, career updates or jobs your company may have that might be suitable for another alum.

So it's with optimism and slightly more altruistic thinking and acts, that we look forward to 2013 and making changes for the better.

Mountbattens Unite Against Cancer

Hayley, Abbe, Chris and Vinay (March 2011 - New York)

Abbe Louise McIntosh Farrell (Ferrier) has organised a charity sponsored cycle from Brixton to Brighton for the charity Unite Against Cancer, and has managed to persuaded three other Mountbatten alumni from her intake, Hayley Spake, Chris Storey and Vinay Mistry to join her. Unite Against Cancer was founded by Abbe's friend Colin, who's brother sadly lost his battle to cancer last year. Unite Against Cancer funds research into the treatment of cancer. Abbe was inspired by Colin's great work to fundraise and wanted to help him out. Organising the sponsored cycle ride has been pretty straightforward so far, Abbe et al are just keeping their fingers crossed for good weather on the day! Support Abbe and her friends in this great cause

Discovering Philanthropy

'Discovering Philanthropy' is a new programme for young professionals and is a collaboration between the Mountbatten Institute, Thomson Reuters and Women's Refugee Commission. We launched the Programme with a panel discussion to talk about how philanthropy can play a major role in achieving your personal and professional goals - this was followed by a reception. This was an event exclusively for current and former Mountbattens. We were fortunate to have a great panel of experts who gave up their time to talk to our group about their motivations, influences and own stories.

Speakers on the panel at the launch event included Sarah Costa, Executive Director, Womens’ Refuge Commission; Debra Walton, Managing Director, Enterprise Content at Thomson Reuters, and WRC Board Member; Tracy Mack Parker, Managing Director, U.S. Institute for Philanthropy; and, Greg Segal, Director of Business Development, Seavest Inc. Vicki Downey, Chief of Staff and Jo Harvey, Global Corporate Partnerships & Relations Director (both from our New York office) represented Mountbatten.

Mountbatten is aiming to launch a similar programme in London for Europe based alumni in the near future. If this is something that interests and inspires you, please contact Vicki McCordall.

Volunteering in the Big Apple

Father Joseph Cyman, who serves as Coordinator of Volunteer Activities in our New York office describes how a number of interns were involved in post Hurricane Sandy aid such as distributing food and water rations for people without power; “Help the Hungry and Homeless” distributing sandwich bags, hot soup and coffee, clothing and items of personal care to the homeless in New York; and, The Village Temple Soup Kitchen in Manhattan.

In addition, there are two new volunteer services provided by One-to-World: February 9 Community Service: Revitalize & Paint a NYC Public School, and May 3 Community Service: Beautify a New York City Park. Full details, sign up details and more volunteer opportunities.
