November 2013

October and November have been very busy and significant months indeed at the Mountbatten Institute for the organisation itself and the interns. Firstly, the Mountbatten Institute Devizal of Arms was unveiled at a reception at the Racquet and Tennis Club in New York on 16th October. You can see the new sheild from the crest in the top banner.

On Sunday 10th November, Current and former Mountbatten and staff representatives of the Institute participated in the annual wreath laying celebration at the Queen Elizabeth September 11th Memorial Garden in lower Manhattan. The ceremony, which was organised by the NY St. George's Society brought together American, British and Commonwealth veteran organisations and wreaths were laid by all of the British and Commonwealth organisations in the Tri-State area.

Also of note, The Independent on Sunday for 6th October published an article entitled "Go global with an international course". Through the voice of Samuel Robson (September 2010 - New York) the Institute's unique components of living, working and studying over 3 continents is mentioned in an extremely favourable light.

Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at Mountbatten Institute.

Alum of the month

Conor Chapple
January 2006 - New York

"Life should always be an adventure, filled with challenges, excitement, and constantly pushing yourself to see how far you can go. For a country boy with little experience of the big wide world, getting a place on Mountbatten was incredibly daunting but I had never felt so alive. "

He was amongst 20 shortlisted writers who were invited to join The Guardian journalists for an afternoon of tea & coffee with the opportunity to approach commissioning editors and pitch their ideas. As a direct result of this workshop, he had his first piece commissioned in the Guardian on 6th October.
Congratulations! We are looking forward to the future developments!

Mountbatten Annual Halloween Party - London

The Mountbatten Intern and Alumni Halloween Party took place on Wednesday 30th October at the wonderfully, spookily decorated The Gable in Moorgate, London. The Brit Art decor which included red telephone boxes, provided a perfect backdrop for our Halloween themed party which started at 7pm with complimentary drinks and bar snacks and although not everybody wore fancy dress, there were some impressive costumes and use of make-up. Partygoers seemed happy to dance and chat the evening away, but did stop briefly for a costume parade and prize-giving for the two most popular outfits. The fun continued well into the evening long after the staff had left...

Charitable Alumni

Jon Castro (March 2009 - London) recently did the Tri State Tough Mudder with a few other London Programme alumni from the March & August 2009 intakes (left to right, Seth Podell, Calvin Chan, Evan Spano, Jonathan Castro, Nick Anable and Daniel Calvo)

The event took place on October 11th and was held at Raceway Park in Englishtown, New Jersey. It was a 13 mile mud run with 25 obstacles along the way ranging from Ice Baths to Fire Jumps to Wall Scales. The charity they supported was the Wonder Warrior Project.

As a part of Generation Moustache, Andre Renaudo (March 2012 - London) has committed his face to the cause and has been growing a moustache for the entire month of November to raise funds and awareness for men's health, in particular supporting world class programmes to combat prostate and testicular cancer. He would very much like your support as he "fights the good fight. I'm restless for change and would love you to support my passion with a donation". You can donate to Andre's moustache online or by writing a check to 'Movember', referencing his registration ID: 9127809 and mailing it to: Movember US, P.O. Box 1595, Culver City, CA 90232. Also, if you are participating in Movember, send us your photos to be included in the next edition. Find more about Movember!

We would like to congratulate everyone for taking part in their various charitable endeavours, and hope they continue to inspire other.

Entrepreneurial Alumni

Archana Gopala Krishna (March 2007 - London), who is based in Bengaluru, India, recently set up her own saree and jewellery business. Archana's background working at Deutsche Bank for 4 years, during which time she participated in the London Programme in 2007, which she acknowledges provided a good solid foundation for then establishing her own business. Archana got married in 2009 and subsequently left Deutsche Bank in 2010 to look after her baby son. It was at that point that she had the idea of setting up her own business.

Archana's company makes jewellery out of crystals as well as other materials and a variety of colourful and stylish sarees, sold at very reasonable prices. View Archana's current designs on her website.

Navneet Lehl (March 2009 - New York) also recently started his own company in May of this year called NSI Bookkeepers. The company focuses on bookkeeping and tax returns. The company is a team of part qualified accountants, who also offer payroll and management accounting services for small to medium sized companies. Once they are qualified, they will offer full accounting services, including completion of profit and loss and banace sheets for limited companies.

We wish both entrepreneurs every success with their new ventures, and look forward to checking in for an update at a later date.
