Alumni Newsletter

May 2014

We're delighted to bring you some exciting updates in this Gala edition of our alumni newsletter.

Firstly, we have just launched our official Mountbatten Institute Alumni Association Group on LinkedIn, so please join us so that we have another channel to communicate job openings and other professional opportunities and information to you as swiftly as possible. Also, please like our page on Facebook, so we can inform you of our latest competitions, events and general updates.

We plan to send out our official 30th Anniversary Gala Dinner invitations to you all next week, so look out for this in your email inboxes. We know some of you have already been in touch to tell us that you have your cohort tables of 10/12 ready, but there will be plenty of room for many more, and even if you have a smaller group of friends, you can still book together, and the Committee will place you with another group to make up the numbers. This is such and exciting an unprecedented opportunity to have the biggest alumni reunion that Mountbatten has ever had.

In addition, there will be an Anniversary Book to commemorate the 30 years of the Mountbatten Institute, and full details of this, and how you can make your contributions to it, as well as further announcements in connection with the anniversary events, such as guest speakers, will be on our Anniversary Event website.

Alum of the month

Michael Gans
March 2011 - London

"One morning I found myself dreading the boring work day ahead. I decided that it was time to move on to something more interesting and fruitful. I began thinking back to our international business courses at Mountbatten to decide where I would want to go in the world that would be both positive for my career as well as interesting on a personal level. I decided to move to India, and after a month of searching I found a business services & boutique investment firm called Total Solutions Group."

Entrepreneurial Alumni

Nick Coombes (January 2008 - New York): I run Bouche Media, a video production and consultancy business for corporate communications. We're based in London's 'Tech City' in Shoreditch and specialize in working with financial services firms, so it's a handy location for the City and an invigorating environment for a start-up. We employ crew on a freelance basis so currently it's only me and an assistant in the office full time. Video production is nearly always on an ad-hoc basis with very short notice for new projects, so there's no need to have a big team at the moment. We now work with some of the biggest names in finance including HSBC, JLL and BDO which is very satisfying for such a small business. Read all about how Nick started his own business.

A day in the life of...

Joanna Wiggins (September 2007 - New York): I'm currently the global content manager for JimmyChoo.com, which essentially means I plan, create and then track all of our online content. This ranges from laying out homepages, to building newsletters and thinking up new ways to present and market collection launches online. It's my job to think up new content, and to identify what type of content will resonate with our customer and convert into sales.

A typical day for me varies a lot, depending on what projects we're currently working on for the site. For instance, we just launched in-language French and German sites this week, so recently my day has started by testing the new sites to make sure the translations haven't broken anything... Mountbatten goes to Washington

Earlier this year the Director General, Dr Paul Beresford-Hill and the Director of the New York office, Vicki Downey, along with colleagues from New York, spent two days on Capitol Hill, meeting with Congressional Aides and several Representative and Senator, to discuss the benefits of programmes like ours and how the kind of 'people to people exchange' that characterises public diplomacy benefits the United States. Also, we wanted to let you know, that over the last few years, we have developed a good working relationship with the recruitment consultancy Robert Walters. Robert Walters places a premium on Mountbatten alumni, hosting a number of Mountbatten only events in their well-appointed London offices based in Covent Garden. They have given us the following update on the data since they have been liaising with us. So, overall they have met and registered 165 candidates who completed the Mountbatten programme, and placed 75, which represents 45% of this number. Recently, on 6th May Robert Walters held an event solely for Mountbatten, and primarily for the March 2013 New York programme returners. Out of the 26 alumni that attended, 14 have interviewed (54%) with clients, and Robert Walters have so far placed 5 of these candidates (19%) at a variety of clients.
