Alumni Newsletter

February 2015

As our March intakes in both New York and London come to the end of their year, it's a time of bitter sweet endings for some, whilst others will continue with their MBA studies in Bangkok. Ceremonies have already been held in Bangkok (MBA) and London, with New York's following shortly. For some, the job search begins, and you can check out the Jobs section below or contact us for specific leads to help you secure that position. This is also an opportunity for existing alumni to help the returners by notifying us of any positions your companies may have around the world. Some of you will be working in companies that have a referral system in place, so it will benefit you as well.

Meanwhile, our illustrious alumni continue to challenge and stretch themselves in their careers and also extra curricula activities and you will see that demonstrated with fundraising efforts, dating agency events, pub quizzes; as well as in our regular sections of Alum of the Month, and Entrepreneurial Alumni.

Having successfully completed his first half marathon in October 2014, Taymore Tabbah (September 2010 - London) figured the logical next step was to double the distance! So on 26th April 2015 he will be running the London Marathon in aid of the UK charity War Child and would be very grateful of any extra support. To find out more and to support him, please go to his fundraising page.

Don't forget to send us any interesting updates, career developments, awards achieved, and marriages/engagements, as we love to keep in touch with how you are doing!

March 2014 Completion & Awards Ceremony in London

On 12 Feb 2015, interns, staff and guests gathered for the March 2014 completion ceremony at The Brewery in Moorgate. The evening began with a drinks reception, which was followed by the ceremony. Gary Ball (Deputy Director General) presented the awards to candidates, while speeches were given by our alum Joanna Wiggins (September 2007 - New York) who is the Global Content Manager at Jimmy Choo; Megan Moody (MBA) and Harleen Bedi (PGC). The speakers entertained the audience, sharing their experiences and a little wisdom along the way, and Jo Wiggins was able to relate her subsequent career path directly to her experiences of being on the programme in New York. Other staff and guests included Dr David Twigg (Academic Director), Dr Johanna Lindemann and Michael Brown (Faculty). There were also company representatives from UBS, Barclays and BAML, as well as Bath University Career Service.

Entrepreneurial Alumni

Chris Worsey (September 2006 - New York):

What your company is/does, and your role in it?
Futurebridge is a for profit social good start-up that uses unique algorithms and in-depth business profiles to match young people into jobs in the tech start-up industry. The social part of our business is that for every three young people we place into a business, we will train another young person in digital skills for free. This widens the digital talent pool and brings down youth unemployment which is one of the biggest challenges globally at the moment.

What inspired you to set it up?
When I was on Mountbatten I was really inspired by the company I worked for, Buchbinder and Warren on Union Square. It was run by two massively successful entrepreneurs who though in their 80's, used to still take a big role in the day to day running of the company. However they didn't just run the company to make money - they also wanted to help their employees and make a difference to the area around them. They formed one of the first Business Improvement Districts in Manhattan, which was hugely influential in transforming their part of the city after the 70s and 80s. They also treated all of their employees and interns as part of an extended family. I actually remember one of the founders, Mr Warren, crying when it came time for the six interns to leave - it was that sort of company. That combination of entrepreneurship, social good and creating a family atmosphere in the work place, made a deep impression on me and began the thinking that culminated in Futurebridge. Alumni Dating in New York - Update

Last month we publicised the launch of Social Concierge (SC), Nana Wereko-Brobby's (March 2009 - New York) professional dating agency in New York. Well, it seems it was a real success, and one Nana is keen to build on, as she explains below...

"The launch of SC in NYC saw over 120 guests descent on Chelsea's No. 8 for an invite-only singles drinks party. We have since decided to move forward with monthly NYC parties with New Yorker Jess Taylor helping grow the network. My focus is on building a recognisable brand in the city. This means offering a consistent 'personality' and format to the events.

As I've learnt from my mentor - an event genius - you have to be famous for something specific so our success in franchising the events relies on building a consistent party brand. SC in NYC needs to be known for exciting parties for single eligible 20/30 somethings... For NYC sign up info for future parties, just email me directly"
