April 2016 Edition

New Beginnings!

April has been an extremely significant month with Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II celebrating her 90th birthsday on 21st April, making her Britain's longest reigning monarch, with no real signs of slowing down any time soon! As head of the Royal House of Mountbatten-Windsor, in Dr Paul Beresford-Hill's words, "she has a special place in our hearts and commands our respect for the years of service and duty she has given both to the UK and the Commonwealth of Nations".

Meanwhile, keeping with the Mountbatten "family" tradition, in this newsletter we have a Mountbatten baby; and a new entrepreneurial venture by 2 alumni who also happen to be a married couple with 2 children!; as well as other usual sections including Day in Life of, Alum of the Month and Jobs. We are delighted so many of you are sharing your endeavours with us - you are an illustrious group of young people.

On a more poignant note we are sorry to have to announce some sad news: 'The Mountbatten organisation was saddened to hear of the death on April 2nd 2016 of Mrs Beate Ernyei who served on our Board of Trustees from 1984 to 2010 and was one of the founding members of the Institute. An Austrian by birth, she emigrated to American after World War II and served in the YMCA as both teacher and administrator. She was very committed to the cause of international student exchange and served with distinction in supporting the growth and development of Mountbatten. She will be missed by her family and friends'.

Icing on the Cake!

Femi Oni (London, March 2015) won a competition at the end of his Mountbatten year, being selected as one of 6 candidates out over 50,000 applicants to win a trip sponsored by LinkedIn to go to Iceland for a weekend of executive coaching covering core skills; Focus, Networking, Physical Presence, Innovation and Growth facilitated by A-list executives including the former boxing world Heavy Weight Champion Dr. Wladimir Klitschko and Sebastian Schelper (Head, BMW Innovationworks). The winners were treated to the best of Iceland outdoors including visit to Iceland National Park featuring iconic sites and other natural wonders.

"The trip to Iceland culminates for me in a most surreal way, the end of a year-long academic cum work adventure and marks the beginning of a new phase. The journey to Iceland was a result of many hours of consistent work and commitment to always put my best foot forward. There is no doubt that I am extremely proud of having been chosen as one of six people out of over 50000+ applications across UK and Germany. Many thanks and congratulations to the wonderful folks at LinkedIn, BMB Agency, the brilliant facilitators and my amiable co-winners for what will be for a long time in my mind an amazing trip to one of the most beautiful places on the planet."

In this post, Femi shares the highlights of his trip and the lessons that he learnt spending three nights in Iceland in the company of "really amazing people in a place I consider to be one of the most awe inspiring terrain on the planet.

Alum
of the Month

Kate Glover
New York, Mar 2009

"My biggest learning experience in the role was over the 2 trade shows I worked on. From sourcing exhibition supplies, to organizing the design of the stand, setting up appointments with key clients, to supporting the models we had presenting the ranges, and all whilst selling for 12 hours a day - I don’t think I knew hard work before then! Oh... and there was the time I supplied Lingerie to Scarlet Johannsen to be worn in the 2nd Iron Man Movie. That was fun."

March 15 Awards Ceremony - New York

On Thursday March 3, 2016 trainees, staff, professors and guests gathered for the March 2015-16 Completion Ceremony in New York at the Yale Club in Midtown Manhattan. The procession of the Director General, Institute Directors and professors began with the accompaniment of Mr Patrick T. Jones on the piano. There was a special treat for this ceremony, as a familiar face in the New York opera scene, Mezzo Elizabeth Bouk, accompanied by Mr Jones on the piano, sang the British and American National Anthems. In addition, throughout the evening ceremony, the attendees were treated to arias from Bizet's opera Carmen. The attendees gave spirited applause to each of the three beautiful renditions by Ms. Bouk's from one of the world's most beloved operas. Provost Dr Ronald Kovach presented students with their Certificate of Programme Completion.

Dr Paul Beresford-Hill then handed out Mountbatten Medallions and Certificate Awards and congratulated the following for their extra accomplishments. We wish the March 2015 intake all the success in their future! Check out this amazing video from the completion ceremony!

Jonny Hough & Claire Collins

New York, January 1999

They met whilst they were both students at the University of Liverpool, UK. They then decided to embark on the NY programme together. They have since enjoyed successful individual careers, married, had two children, and now (if that already isn't enough!), a few months ago set up Effra Digital, their own digital marketing agency specialising in design and build of responsive websites, digital project management, evaluation and training! Their aim is to "expand and build our business so we can competitively bid for work alongside established agencies. We'd love to take on a Mountbatten Intern of our own at some point". They explain how they have "taken an evolutionary approach to starting out which has helped us to minimise the risk and ensure we can continue to pay the mortgage and feed the kids. Before Claire quit her job we crunched all the numbers and set ourselves targets of what we'd need to deliver each month to be successful. I'd definitely recommend that approach". Read full article.
