New Initiatives

There is plenty to tell you about in our latest newsletter, which highlights 2 entrepreneurs; an exciting gender equality launch initiative with an event supported by a current trainee on the New York Programme; plus social entrepreneur Dave Hutchinson's Sexy Socks is through to the final stages of the UN Global Sourcing Council's 3S Awards. Meanwhile, Mounbatten Connect, has grown swiftly in a relatively short time and currently boasts over 1230 users from our alumni, and is advertising over 30 live job vacancies. If you haven't already, do join as it's a great tool for connecting, communicating and networking with alumni across the intakes/globe etc, plus it's handy if you are looking for a job!

We are still interested in more "Living Abroad" stories, plus it would be great to feature some more Mountbatten Weddings - we know there are lots out there, so do get in touch with your stories and photos.

Awards Season

Dave Hutchison (London, March 2013), a graduate of the University of Cape Town has some exciting news for Sexy Socks, his social enterprise: they have made it through to the final stages of the United Nations Global Sourcing Council's 3S Awards. It is a United Nations competition that seeks to highlight small and medium sized businesses that have a social cause. Dave goes on to explain, "since we use our Sock Drops as a platform to highlight entrepreneurship, we have been entered into the Empowerment Category. For every pair of Sexy Socks sold, Sexy Socks sponsors a pair of school socks to a student in South Africa. But we're about more than just giving away socks. We use the Sock Drops (where we go into the schools and give every child a pair of socks) as a platform to promote entrepreneurship, and talk to the students about how business can be used as a force for change in South Africa. The winner and runner up are invited to attend the UN GSC event in New York in May, and are put through a leadership bootcamp for social enterprises. Sounds incredible!"

Although Sexy Socks has narrowly missed out on the People's Choice Award, Dave is still waiting to hear about the Empowerment Category later in May. In the meantime, we would all like to wish Dave every success in his ground breaking ventures, and hope Sexy Socks goes from strength to strength as it continues to inspire others.

Laura Thorburn
New York, March 2010

"I wouldn't change a single thing, it was one of the best years of my life... [After completing the Programme] I was hired full time by my boss at the time, Jolie Hunt, who ran communications at Thomson Reuters. I worked for them in London for two years as a PR Specialist who looked after EMEA for the Reuters news agency... I am [now] the Director and Head of the Media Practice at Hunt & Gather, a three-year old marketing and communications agency. I'm based out of New York and moved back to the States three years ago to start the agency with Jolie Hunt and Erin Kurtz (they were my bosses at Thomson Reuters during Mountbatten)."

Pass The Mic New York

Launch Event

"Culture does not make people. People make culture. If it is true that the full humanity of women is not our culture, then we can and must make it our culture." Megan Liles (New York, August 2016) would like to invite you to join an initiative she is launching in New York offering an opportunity to learn, network and encourage a generation of young professionals to fight for gender equality at monthly meet ups. Pass The Mic is an opportunity for YOU to take action and change the gender equality conversation with a focus on diversifying the spectrum of the feminist experience. Megan is encouraging Mountbattens to challenge their opinions and advocate for gender equality – and Pass The Mic wants to pass the voice of feminism to Mountbatten. The monthly meetings are to challenge and be challenged, to educate and learn. This initiative offers support and a platform to Mountbatten students to take control and make a tangible difference towards gender equality. With additional support from the United Nations HeForShe campaign, Megan is creating a new initiative to make a change. Please get involved in the events and meet successful professionals who want to get involved and change the world!

The campaign is also currently looking for a space to host their launch event or any support from Alumni who are interested in their initiative is much appreciated. Please email Jo Harvey if you are interested and would like to be updated on these events!

Mountbatten Connect Update

We have been delighted with the swift uptake of our new alumni platform, Mountbatten Connect. Since it's launch in January this year, more than 1230 alumni have joined the platform. The alumni come from as far back as 1991 New York intake, and reach the most recent alumni cohorts. The platform has already been extremely active, publicising events, awards, and enabling members to find others from their intake; discover alumni colleagues working in their own company; or locate alumni living in the same town/city. The jobs board has been very busy too, and we currently have 36 active jobs posted primarily by alumni who are looking to recruit other alumni into their companies. The positions are hugely diverse and come from a variety of locations, but here is a snapshot: White & Case LLP, NY seek a Legal Recruiting Assistant; Aptean in Northampton, UK need a Marketing Specialist; Reuters News Agency in London require a Marketing Coordinator; The Financial Times in London are looking for a Special Projects Executive; there's a Software Developer position in Illinois, US; and a Trade & Investment Officer Oil & Gas needed for the UK Department for International Trade in Houston, Texas. There are also openings in Sydney, Australia and Germany. Check out all these incredible opportunities on Mounbatten Connect.
