High Profiles

It's great to hear from so many of our alumni, and to learn about their projects, ventures and causes. This month we have a very varied content with an "In the News" section to showcase what some of our members have been up to in the media. Meanwhile, Mounbatten Connect continues to grow in numbers and as a platform, and currently stands at over 1,300 members. There are 37 Jobs at present, and one lucky alum has just been offered a role that we advertised at ITV London.

We are delighted to announce a new initiative at Mountbatten in NY called Pass The Mic, which was developed and driven by current NY Trainee, Megan Liles. Megan has been inspired by various gender equality initiatives, and in particular the UN Women's #HeForShe campaign. Megan created 'Pass The Mic' for Mountbatten to give a platform for open and honest debate around the important issue of gender equality, within the Mountbatten community. Mountbatten were delighted to support the first 'Pass The Mic' event on Thursday May 11, 2017 in NY organized by Megan, which introduced attendees to the UN #HeForShe campaign, and had a panel discussion moderated by Dinal Limbachia from UN Women. See the photo album.

We would very much like alumni to get involved in this initiative, to work alongside the current NY Trainees. Please contact Jo Harvey if you would like to get involved. Right now this is in NY but we hope in the future groups will emerge in other locations.

New Appointment

As some of you may already have seen on our social media, we are delighted to welcome Mr Richard Sexton MBE, as the new CEO of the Mountbatten Internship Programme, GAP Activities Project Inc. Mr Sexton assumed his duties on May 1st, 2017.

Richard is a highly respected member of the British community in New York, having just completed his term as President of the St George's Society. He also has 20 years of international business experience and has been Senior Managing Director at Newmark Grubb Knight Frank in New York. While there, he introduced Mountbatten to the company and has worked with many intakes of interns/trainees. See the press release for a detailed outline of Richard's experience and background.

We would like to thank Mr Dennis Lovaglio for his contribution to the New York programme over the last two years, and wish him well with his future plans.

Alum
of the Month

Sarah Wambe (Rath)
London, March 2005

"Growing up I never had a clear idea of what I wanted to do with my life, and yet every experience I have had since graduation has prepared me for the role I hold today. Mountbatten gave me an experience that helped form me into the person I am today… Currently I am the Director of Admissions for Concord University, a small, public university in southern West Virginia. In this role I oversee all undergraduate admissions, marketing, social media, CRM implantation, as well as do international student recruitment and new student immigration."

Entrepreneurial Alumni

Nick Christoforou

New York, September 2009

Nick, a born salesman, and a graduate of Oxford Brookes University, has a business NC Real Estate, which focusses on buying and selling land for property developers and traders. His role is to put the right buyers and sellers together and negotiate the best price and position for his client. Nick goes on to explain, "my client could be the buyer or the seller. For example, I recently acquired an office building for a client in Southampton, the building had permission to convert into 67 apartments with a GDV of c.£10M. Earlier this month I brokered a deal for a client in Brixton, selling his building for over £3M." Read full article.

Joe Davenport

Joe, a graduate of Bournemouth University, UK, is the joint founder and Director of November Digital Ltd. They create Digital Promotional Content for brands. The company only works in the digital space, so all of their work is essentially for life on the internet - Social Media / Video Platforms / Websites etc. The scope of their work ranges from graphic design, video production, animation, illustration, all the way through to owning and art directing a brand's entire social media channel.

Joe established November over two and a half years ago, with the intention of standing for something and attracting a very particular client (to begin with), in order to stand out from other similar businesses. Read full article.

In The News

Our alumni profile seems to be rising higher than ever! Here's a snapshot of a few news/social media stories this month so far:

In London, we were delighted to organise an Entrepreneurial Evening for Nana Wereko-Brobby (New York, March 2009) with current Mountbatten London trainees. Over pizzas and soft drinks, Nana shared her experiences of setting up Social Concierge, her private members dating agency, starting from inception through to its fruition and success! Proudly, Social Concierge has launched in New York and soon will also be launching in Hong Kong! So all you singletons in HK, watch this space - she already has members of our alumni amongst her client base! We would like to thank Nana for being very generous with her time and effort to give back to Mountbatten.

Daniel Chalmeta (New York, March 2016) was recently contacted by Arianna Huffington and asked to write for her on her new startup Thrive Global. His first article is about taking chances in life and Daniel says, "it is partly inspired by when I felt in doubt about whether moving to New York with the Mountbatten Institute was a crazy and scary idea or not. So I wanted to share it with you or in case more people feel inspired by this and they take a chance, by applying to the program".

Sarah Hatcher (New York, September 2005), is the Director of White Marble Marketing, which is one of the finalists listed recently in Investment Week, for Investment Marketing & Innovation Awards 2017. The awards are now in their 4th year and are designed to recognise creativity and innovation within the sector. Sarah's company is listed under the Agency of the Year (PR/Creative) category, and a ceremony will be held on 30th June at the Brewery London.

Monique Perks MAEL (New York, March 2016) was recently interviewed on BBC Breakfast news in connection with some freelance writing she does for Debut, a graduate careers app. Debut has launched a campaign to try and make it a legal obligation for companies to give feedback after a face to face interview. It is something Monique is very passionate about, and was more than happy when they asked her to be the face of the campaign. Debut is currently gathering as many signatures as possible on a petition which would enable them to take their cause to government, with the intention of getting some laws changed. If you would like to support this petition, please use this link: http://debut.careers/feedback-petition/.
